The Adventure

After the sleepless night we make a late start in the early evening.  In the safe house we gather for dinner and discuss our plans.  The leader of Order of Westcrown tells us of a group of half-tieflings in an abandoned church in the slums.  He tells us that this group has been responsible for several high-profile robberies of merchants in the town, and last night was responsible for killing a well-known dwarvensmith and his wife.

The officials in the town seem to not care.  We suspect that the group is paying “protection” money to town officials and that only we can do something about it.  We are given directions and decide to leave the next morning.

As we approach the church, we can see its bell tower.  However, the bell missing, we see the silhouette of a humanoid.  We decide that we need to take out the guard before we can approach the church.  Bindle, the gnome illusionist, disguises himself as a tiefling with Disguise Self.  Koa, the monk, sneaks from building to building until he’s within range.  The rest of us about 60-feet away prepare to attack with an assortment of ranged weapons.  Bindle approaches the bell tower.

The guard waves at Bindle and continues to scan the area as Bindle gets within spell range.  The monk springs from his hiding spot and nails the guard squarely.  Bindle pulls out a crossbow and shoots the guard dead.  We approach the front door of the dilapidated church.

We pause and wait to see if those inside may have been alerts, but nothing.  Bindle, still in his disguise, goes to the front door.  Surprisingly its open and the door swings open.  Several humans and tieflings are inside, look up at him, and then continue eating their lunch except one who says, “What’s with that Gnome.”  Roll initiative.

Bindle, quick to react, casts Color Spray and three enemies are stunned.  The monk, moves up and jumps onto the table, punching one of them in the face.  Bort, our human fighter, moves into the room to block any one from escaping, but is shortly surrounded by all enemies in the table furthest from the door.  Toobuffru, our rogue, moves in to flank and takes out one of the guards.

Several rounds later there is only one left, but he withdraws and runs down a flight of stairs heading to the basement, while screaming.  Everyone follows him down the stairs except the sorcerer who stays to coup de’ grace the stunned guards at the first table.

As we all rush down its dark.  Max casts light on Bort’s sword and we notice an opened door at the base of the stairs.  Bort moves into the room and we are surprised by several Undead!  Roll Initiative.

Bort, flanked by the Undead dispatches one with a swift blow from his longsword and a bash from his shield.  He moves to make room for our Rogue.  The other undead from the across the room stir and move toward us.  Max, peaking through the door channels Positive Energy damaging the Undead.

While we work on the undead a door opens and the guard that me missed and one other shoot at Bort with their crossbows.  Bort, unphased by their surprise attack moves between then and slashing one squarely knocking him unconscious.  The other guard drops his crossbow and pulls out a Morning Star and swings, but misses.  Bort cleans his clock moments later.  We gather.

How did the guys control this undead?  We search the bodies and notice an unholy symbol around the necks of the guards we just dispatched.  Perhaps there’s a cleric nearby who created these undead.  We notice another door that goes into an unhewed wall, outside the foundation of the church.

Bort listens at the door and hears nothing and then stands guard at the door while the others search the area.  Nothing of importance so we all prepare to go though though.  Bort opens the door and it leads into an underground tunnel to the
south.  The Rogue, steps forward and leads the party though the passageway.

The tunnels seems curves to the right and we notice light up ahead.  We cover our own lights and approach.  Koa, the monk, is impatient, and runs forward into the lighted area.  He turns the corner and finds himself surrounded by nearly a dozen surprised humanoids.  Roll initiative.

Koa, during the surprise round does a Flurry of Blows to the nearest guard, but misses.  The Rogue moves in the room and fights back to back to the monk taking out one of the guards with a critical charging attack.  The rest of us move forward.

They surround us.  A Magic-user in the far side of the room hurls a Magic Missile at the monk.  Several rounds pass, but we take care of them all.  Looks like they where just about to go do another excursion in the city, but we foiled them.

The staging area we are in has three passages leading from it, two to a flight of stairs edged into the unworked stone going up to a trap door and the other passage way going circling to the north.  Guarding where we are relative to the church, we think the stairs lead to two of the nearby buildings.

Short session, but we end there.
