Peter Zaitsev’s Speaking Schedule: Percona University Belgium / PG Day / Meetups

Peter Zaitsev Speaking Schedule

This blog shows Peter Zaitsev’s speaking schedule for this summer.

Summer 2017 Speaking Engagements

This week I spoke at the DB Tech Showcase OSS conference in Japan and am now heading to Europe. I have a busy schedule in June and early July, but there are events and places where we can cross paths and have a quick conversation. Let’s meet at these events if you need anything from Percona (or me personally).

Below is a full list of places I’ll be at this summer:

Amsterdam, Netherlands

On June 20 I am speaking at the In-Memory Computing Summit 2017 with Denis Magda (Product Manager, Gridgain Systems). Our talk “Accelerate MySQL® for Demanding OLAP and OLTP Use Cases with Apache® Ignite™” starts at 2:35 pm.

On the same day in Amsterdam, Denis and I will speak at the local MySQL User Group meetupI will share some how-tos for MySQL monitoring with Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM), along with a PMM demo.

Ghent, Belgium

On June 22 we are organizing a Percona University event in Ghent, Belgium, which is a widely known tech hub in the region. I will give several talks there on MySQL, MongoDB and PMM monitoring. Dimitri Vanoverbeke from Percona will discuss MySQL in the Cloud. We have also invited guest speakers: Frederic Descamps from Oracle, and Julien Pivotto from Inuits.

Percona University technical events are 100% free to attend, and so far we are getting very positive attendee feedback on them. To check the full agenda for the Belgium edition, and to register, please use this link.

St. Petersburg, Russia

Percona is sponsoring PG Day’17 Russia, the PostgreSQL conference. This year they added a track on open source databases (and I was happy to be their Committee member for the OSDB track). The conference starts on July 5, and on that day I will give a tutorial on InnoDB Architecture and Performance Optimization. Sveta Smirnova will also present a tutorial on MySQL Performance Troubleshooting.

On July 6-7, you can expect four more talks given by Perconians at PG Day. We invite you to stop by our booth (“Percona”) and ask us any tough questions you might have.

Moscow, Russia

On July 11 I will speak at a Moscow MySQL User Group meetup at the Mail.Ru Group office. While we’re still locking down the agenda, we always have a great selection of speakers at the MMUG meetups. Make sure you don’t miss this gathering!

Thank you, and I hope to see many of you at these events.

Percona Live Amsterdam Recap

This year’s Percona Live for Europe proved to be a turning point for the conference.

First and most obvious was the change of venue. After several years in London we decided to move the show to Amsterdam and we were quite pleased. The weather was not much different (it rained most of the time) but the new venue was great and the more central location in Europe made attending the show easier for many.

A couple of interesting factoids about the attendees. First, we had over 300 hundred registered attendees – a 25%+ increase over last year. Not surprisingly, most of those in attendance were from Europe but we had folks from as far away as Chile, South Africa and Japan.

image02

Our attendees also had a pretty broad range of functions. As you would expect, DBAs and developers made up the bulk of the crowd, but we had a good mix of IT managers, sys admins, security experts, product managers and web developers. This broadening of the community is quite encouraging.

image00

Also encouraging was the number of new faces this year. With the added number of people attending it’s obvious that we would have to have some new folks at the conference, but it turns out that over half of those in attendance were new this year. It’s also nice to see from the survey response below that a large number of attendees found out about the conference from friends and colleagues. We do our best to make Percona Live a good use of time and money for attendees and there are no better indications of this than repeat attendees and peer recommendations.

image01

Another nice bit of feedback I received was that this year’s EMEA conference felt like a smaller version of the Santa Clara Percona Live. This is our exact intention and we will continue to invest in this show and in the region.

We were also excited to announce our release candidate of Percona Server for MongoDB. Much like our widely deployed Percona Server for MySQL,  Percona Server for MongoDB is a default compatible version of MongoDB, offering enterprise features in a free community edition. It also comes with multiple storage options including RocksDB and PerconaFT.

As always, though, the focus of Percona Live is delivering really good technical content. This is why people come back each year and tell their friends and colleagues.

Our highest rated tutorial at Percona Live Amsterdam was “Advanced Percona XtraDB Cluster in a nutshell, la suite : Hands on tutorial not for beginners!” Delivered by our own Frederic Descamps and Kenny Gryp.

This is no surprise really. We do like our beginner sessions, of course, and they are well attended, but our deeply technical sessions are what put these conferences on the map and it’s why we are still popular with the hardcore technical folks. Congrats to Frederic and Kenny!

The most popular sessions were:

  • MongoDB, Wired Tiger, and the era of pluggable storage engines by Kenny Gorman, Chief Technologist, Data – Office of the CTO, ObjectRocket by Rackspace
  • Performance Schema and Sys Schema in MySQL 5.7 by Mark Leith, Senior Software Development Manager, MySQL @ Oracle
  • Innodb and XtraDB Architecture and Performance Optimization by our “fairly technical” CEO Peter Zaitsev

What was really gratifying for me was the feedback I received, all of which was very positive. It’s very satisfying to get such favorable feedback and we’ll strive to make next year’s conference even better.

I want to thank all of the speakers who provided such great content, and all of the sponsors without whom we would not be be able to put on such a great conference.  Mostly though, I would like to thank the attendees who trust us enough to put good money down and spend a week away from the office to learn something new. We are grateful for that level of trust and will continue to work hard to earn it.

The language of compression

Leif Walsh & friends

Leif Walsh will talk about the language of compression at Percona Live Amsterdam

Storage. Everyone needs it. Whether your data is in MySQL, a NoSQL, or somewhere in the cloud, with ever-growing data volumes – along with the need for SSDs to cut latency and replication to provide insurance – an organization’s storage footprint is an important place to look for savings. That’s where compression comes in (squeeze!) to save disk space.

Two Sigma software engineer Leif Walsh speaks the language of compression. Fluently. In fact, he’ll be speaking on

that exact subject September 22 during the Percona Live conference in Amsterdam.

I asked him about his talk, and about Amsterdam, the other day. Here’s what he had to say.

* * *

Tom: Hi Leif, how will your talk help IT decision-makers cut through the marketing mumbo-jumbo on what’s important to focus on and what is not
Leif: My talk will have three lessons aimed at those making storage decisions for their company:

  1. What are the key factors to consider when evaluating storage options, and how can they affect your bottom line?  This is not only how storage tech influences your hardware, operations, and management costs, but also how it can facilitate new development initiatives and cut time-to-market for your products.
  2. How should you read benchmarks and marketing materials about storage technology?  You’ll learn what to look for in promotional material, and how to think critically about whether that material is applicable to your business needs.
  3. What’s the most effective way to communicate with storage vendors about your application’s requirements?  A lot of time can be spent in the early stages of a relationship in finding a common language for users and vendors to have meaningful discussions about users’ needs and vendors’ capacity to meet those needs.  With the tools you’ll learn in my talk, you’ll be able to accelerate quickly to the high-bandwidth conversations you need to have in order to make the right decision, and consequently, you’ll be empowered to evaluate more choices to find the best one faster.

Tom: In addition to IT decision-makers, who else should attend your session and what will they take away afterward?
Leif: My talk is primarily about the language that everyone in the storage community should be using to communicate. Therefore, storage vendors should attend to get ideas for how  to express their benchmarks and their system’s properties more effectively, and application developers and operations people will learn strategies for getting better support and for making a convincing case to the decision makers in their own company.

Tom: Which session(s) are you most looking forward to besides your own?
Leif: Sam Kottler is a good friend and an intensely experienced systems engineer with a dynamic and boisterous personality, so I can’t wait to hear more about his experiences with Linux tuning.

As one of the original developers of TokuMX, I’ll absolutely have to check out Stephane’s talk about it, but I promise not to heckle. Charity Majors is always hilarious and has great experiences and insights to share, so I’ll definitely check out her talk too.
