Percona Live & OpenStack Live 2015 wrap-up

Peter Zaitsev's opening keynote

Peter Zaitsev kicks off Percona Live 2015

With highlights that included news of Percona’s acquisition of Tokutek, a lively keynote discussion with Apple legend Steve “Woz” Wozniak, scores of technical sessions, tutorials and a festive MySQL community dinner and game night, last week’s Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo had something for everyone.

More than 1,200 attendees from around the world converged upon Santa Clara, California for the event, which included for the first time a two-day OpenStack Live track alongside a two-day crash course for aspiring MySQL DBAs called “MySQL 101.”

With the Tokutek acquisition, announced last Tuesday by Peter Zaitsev, Percona becomes the first company to offer both MySQL and MongoDB software and solutions. Percona has also taken over development and support for TokuDB® and TokuMX™ as well as the revolutionary Fractal Tree® indexing technology that enables those products to deliver improved performance, reliability and compression for modern Big Data applications. Peter talks in depth about the technologies in last week’s post.

Also on Tuesday, “Woz” and Jim Doherty, EVP of Sales & Marketing, talked about a range of issues associated with technology and innovation.

The Apple co-founder and inventor of the Apple I and Apple II computers also shared his thoughts on what influenced him growing up, his approach to problem solving, childhood education, artificial intelligence and more. (You can view the entire 45-minute conversation by clicking on the Woz to the left.)

Tweets of #PerconaLive during the conference hit nearly 2,000 – many with photos that are worth looking at (see all of the tweets here).

The other keynotes included:

In addition to the above keynotes, all of the sessions were recorded and will be available soon for registered attendees who had access to them at the conference. Most of the slides will be available soon to everyone via the Percona Live 2015 site. Just click the session you’re interested in and scroll to the bottom of the page to view the slides.

Congratulations go out to all of the MySQL Community Awards 2015 winners with a special thanks to Shlomi Noach and Jeremy Cole for running the awards program.

Special thanks also goes out to the Percona Live and OpenStack Live 2015 conference committees, which together organized a fantastic week of events. And of course none of the events would have been possible without our generous Percona Live sponsors and OpenStack Live sponsors.

Finally, a round of applause for Percona’s director of conferences, Kortney Runyan, for her monumental efforts organizing the event. Kortney could not have succeeded without the support of our multiple service vendors including Ireland Presentations, Carleson Production Group, Tricord, the Hyatt Santa Clara, and the Santa Clara Convention Center, to name just a few.

Also announced last week was the new venue for Percona Live Europe, which will be held September 21-22 in Amsterdam. Percona Live Amsterdam promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Call for Papers is open for this exciting new venue so be sure to submit your proposals now.

See you in Amsterdam this September! And be sure to save the date for Percona Live 2016 – April 18-21 at the the Hyatt Santa Clara, and the Santa Clara Convention Center.

Percona Live 2015 Lightning Talks, BoF submission deadline Feb. 13! And introducing “MySQL 101? program

It’s hard to believe that the Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo is just over two months away (April 13-16 in Santa Clara, California). So if you’ve been thinking about submitting a proposal for the popular “Lightning Talks” and/or “Birds of a Feather” sessions, it’s time to get moving because the deadline to do so if February 13.

Lightning Talks provide an opportunity for attendees to propose, explain, exhort, or rant on any MySQL-related topic for five minutes. Topics might include a new idea, successful project, cautionary story, quick tip, or demonstration. All submissions will be reviewed, and the top 10 will be selected to present during the one-hour Lightning Talks session on Wednesday (April 15) during the Community Networking Reception. Lighthearted, fun or otherwise entertaining submissions are highly welcome. Submit your proposal here.

"MySQL 101" is coming to Percona Live 2015

“MySQL 101″ is coming to Percona Live 2015.

Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions enable attendees with interests in the same project or topic to enjoy some quality face time. BoFs can be organized for individual projects or broader topics (e.g., best practices, open data, standards). Any attendee or conference speaker can propose and moderate an engaging BoF. Percona will post the selected topics and moderators online and provide a meeting space and time. The BoF sessions will be held Tuesday night, (April 14) from 6- 7 p.m. Submit your BoF proposal here.

This year we’re also adding a new program for MySQL “newbies.” It’s called “MySQL 101,” and the motto of this special two-day program is: “You send us developers and admins, and we will send you back MySQL DBAs.” The two days of practical training will include everything they need to know to handle day-to-day MySQL DBA tasks.

“MySQL 101,” which is not included in regular Percona Live registration, will cost $400. However, the first 101 tickets are just $101 if you use the promo code “101” during checkout.

New: 25-Minute Sessions
On the first day of the conference, Percona is now offering 25-minute talks that pack tons of great information into a shorter format to allow for a wider range of topics. The 25-minute sessions include:

Percona Live 2015 25-Minute Sessions

I also wanted to give another shout-out to Percona Live 2015’s awesome sponsor, which include: VMware, Yahoo, Deep Information Sciences, Pythian, Codership, Machine Zone, Box, Yelp, MariaDB, SpringbokSQL, Tesora, BlackMesh, SolidFire, Severalnines, Tokutek, VividCortex, FoundationDB, ScaleArc, Walmart eCommerce and more.(Sponsorship opportunities are still available.)

The great thing about Percona Live conferences is that there is something for everyone within the MySQL ecosystem – veterans and newcomers alike. And for the first time this year, that community expands to encompass OpenStack. Percona Live attendees can also attend OpenStack Live events. Those events run April 13-14, also at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara and Santa Clara Convention Center.

OpenStack Live tutorials & sessions to bring OpenStack users up to speed

I attended the OpenStack Paris summit last month (Percona had a booth there). It was my first opportunity to meet face-to-face with this thriving community of developers and users. I’m proud that Percona is part of this open source family and look forward to reconnecting with many of the developers and users I met in Paris – as well as meeting new faces – at OpenStack Live in Silicon Valley April 13-14.

OpenStack Live 2015: Sneak peak of the April conferenceOpenStack summits, generally held twice a year, are the place where (for the most part) developers meet and design “in the open,” as the OpenStack organization says. OpenStack Live 2015, held in parallel with the annual Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo, will be a unique opportunity for users and enthusiasts to learn from leading OpenStack experts in the field about top cloud strategies, improving overall cloud performance, and operational best practices for managing and optimizing OpenStack and its MySQL database core.

OpenStack Live will also provide some serious classroom-style learning. Percona announced the OpenStack Live tutorials sessions a couple days ago. Most sessions are three hours long and because they really are “hands-on” require that you bring your laptop – and a power cord (not to be confused with a “power chord,” though those also welcome”).

Let’s take a closer look at the OpenStack Live tutorial sessions.

Barbican: Securing Your Secrets.” Join Rackspace gurus Douglas Mendizábal, Chelsea Winfree and Steve Heyman on a tour through the magical world of Barbican (yes, they are dedicated members of the Barbican project).

Don’t be intimidated if don’t have any previous experience with Barbican (and if you’ve never heard of it, more the reason to attend!). A basic understanding of security components (such as keys and certificates) and a basic understanding of ReST is helpful, but not required.

By the end of the class you will know:
1)   Importance of secret storage
2)   How to store & retrieve secrets with Barbican
3)   How to submit an order with Barbican
4)   How to create a container
5)   Use cases for Barbican / Examples
6)   The future of Barbican –Ordering SSL Certs

Deploying, Configuring and Operating OpenStack Trove.” As the title suggests, these three hours focus squarely on Trove. The tutorial – led by Tesora founder & CTO Amrith Kumar, along with Doug Shelley, the company’s vice president of product development – will begin with a quick overview of OpenStack and the various services.

If you attend this tutorial you’ll actually deploy your own OpenStack environment – and create and manage a Nova (compute) instance using a command line and a graphical user interface (Horizon). And the fun continues! You’ll then install and configure Trove, and create and manage a single MySQL instance. Finally, pupils will create and operate a simple replicated MySQL instance pair and ensure that data is being properly replicated from master to slave.

Essential DevStack.” DevStack is an opinionated script to quickly create an OpenStack development environment. It can also be used to demonstrate starting/running OpenStack services and provide examples of using them from a command line. The power of DevStack lies within small trick that if people understand can hugely improve the contribution effectiveness, quality and required time. This three-hour tutorial will be led by Red Hat senior software engineer Swapnil Kulkarni.

OpenStack Networking Introduction,” with PLUMgrid’s Valentina Alaria and Brendan Howes. Buckle your seat belts! Designed for IT professionals looking to expand their OpenStack “networking” (no, not the LinkedIn sort of networking) knowledge, OpenStack Networking Fundamentals will be a comprehensive and fast-paced course.

This half-day training provides an overview of OpenStack, its components and then dives deep into OpenStack Networking – the features and plugin model and its role in building an OpenStack Cloud. The training is concluded with a hands-on lab to bring all the concepts together.

OpenStack Networking (Neutron) Introduction [1 hour]
– Goal of Neutron
– Architecture of Neutron
– Plugin Architecture
– Use cases for Neutron
– What’s new in Juno & what’s planned for Kilo

OpenStack Networking (Neutron) Advanced [1 hour]
– Interaction with other OpenStack components (Compute & Storage)
– Designing Neutron for HA
– Installing Neutron
– Troubleshooting Neutron

Hands-on Lab [1 hour]
– Creation of tenant networks
– Configuration of external connectivity
– Advanced Features Configurati

Percona’s director of conferences, Kortney Runyan, offered a sneak peek at the OpenStack sessions last week. Attendees of the Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo 2015 (April 13-16, 2015) with full-pass access are also welcome to attend OpenStack Live sessions. The two conferences are running in parallel, which is very exciting since there will be crossover opportunities between them.

I hope to see you next April! And be sure to take advantage of Early Bird pricing for OpenStack Live (register here).
And if you are an organizer of an OpenStack (or MySQL) Meetup and need some financial help, Percona is happy to chip in as a sponsor. Just let me know and I’ll work with you to set that up! You can drop me a note in the comments and I’ll contact you offline.

Percona Server, OpenStack and the Tesora DBaaS Platform

Percona Server, OpenStack and the Tesora DBaaS PlatformPercona Server and Percona XtraDB Cluster provide high-performance alternatives for MySQL users. We have also seen rapidly growing interest in these solutions in the OpenStack community where higher performance and high availability are crucial. Many OpenStack users are adopting these solutions but we’ve also seen demand from companies creating OpenStack distros. For example, Percona XtraDB Cluster is now certified for the RHEL OSP (OpenStack Platform) and is included in the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS release. Tesora recently joined this rapidly growing list when they announced the Tesora DBaaS Platform Enterprise Edition which includes Percona Server.

The Tesora platform is an enterprise-ready database as a service (DBaaS) platform based on the OpenStack Trove project. Percona Server was certified by Tesora in August as part of their Tesora DBaaS Platform certification program.

What does this mean for you if you are one of the users who have downloaded Percona Server more than 1,000,000 times?

Many enterprises are evaluating how to deliver robust, high-performance MySQL-as-a-service. OpenStack Trove is is an open-source platform that addresses this challenge. OpenStack operators can build and offer multiple databases as a service (such as MySQL, MongoDB, or Redis). These users can create, operate, maintain and delete different kinds of SQL or NoSQL databases on demand. Users don’t need to worry about the administrative details of the database technology nor complexities such as availability, resiliency, backups, recovery and security.

The Tesora DBaaS Platform Enterprise Edition builds upon OpenStack Trove and makes the “provisioning, deployment, configuration, tuning, monitoring and administration” simpler for operators. The platform includes support for multiple database backends including Percona Server which is certified on the Tesora DBaaS platform. Administrators and DBAs looking to build and offer a database as a service using the Tesora DBaaS Platform Enterprise Edition can rest assured that Percona Server is ready to meet their needs.

OpenStack is a rapidly evolving open-source platform that depends heavily on MySQL for optimal performance. Percona is participating in the Trove project and is sharing our knowledge on OpenStack through webinars (such as “OpenStack: A MySQL DBA Perspective“), blog posts (such as “OpenStack users shed light on Percona XtraDB Cluster deadlock issues“), professional services (such as Percona Consulting Services) and the recently announced OpenStack Live Conference which will be held April 13-14 2015 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley (the Call for Speakers is open until November 9!).

We look forward to working with Tesora as they build out their platform as well as the rest of the OpenStack community as this exciting technology continues to mature. I hope you can join us in Santa Clara for the OpenStack Live Conference this April – submit your speaker proposal now or purchase your ticket at Super Saver prices!

OpenStack Trove Day 2014 Recap: MySQL and DBaaS

OpenStack Trove Day

OpenStack Trove Day

I just returned from a week in Cambridge, Massachusetts where I was attending the OpenStack Trove Day and the Trove mid-cycle meetup, both sponsored by the great folks at Tesora.

I am relatively new to the OpenStack and Trove arenas so this was a fantastic opportunity for me to learn more about the communities, the various components within OpenStack, and what part Trove plays. I found the entire event very worthwhile – I met a lot of key people in the community, learned more about Trove and its potential, and in general felt a great energy and excitement surrounding Trove and OpenStack as a whole.

There were more than 120 attendees at Trove Day. That is almost four times the initial estimate! I think I would call that a success. There were 7 very high quality topics that covered material ranging from new and coming features within Trove, to deep inspection of how it is currently used in several big name companies to an investor’s perspective of the OpenStack market. There were also 2 panel style discussions that covered a lot of ground with all participants being ‘guys on the ground’ actively working with OpenStack deployments including one of my fellow Perconians, Mr. Tim Sharp.

One of the main takeaways for me from the entire day was the forward looking adoption estimates for Trove. This came up over and over through the various talks and panels. There seems to be a tremendous amount of interest in Trove deployments for late 2014/2015 but very few actual live users today. There also seems to be a bit of a messaging issue and confusion amongst potential users as to what Trove really is and is not. Simply reading the Trove Mission Statement should quickly clarify:

The OpenStack Open Source Database as a Service Mission: To provide scalable and reliable Cloud Database as a Service provisioning functionality for both relational and non-relational database engines, and to continue to improve its fully-featured and extensible open source framework.

So allow me to expand on that a bit based on some specific comments or questions that I overheard:
– Trove is NOT a database abstraction layer nor any sort of database unification tool; all applications still communicate with their respective datastores directly through their native APIs.
– Trove is NOT a database monitoring, management or analysis tool; all of your favorite debugging and monitoring tools like Percona Toolkit will still work exactly as advertised, and yes, you do need a monitoring tool.
– Although Trove does have some useful backup scheduling options, Trove is NOT a complete backup and recovery tool that can accommodate every backup strategy; you may still use 3rd party options such as scripting your own around Percona XtraBackup or make your life a lot easier and sign up for the Percona Backup Service.
– Trove IS a very nice way to add resource provisioning for many disparate datastores and has some ‘smarts’ built in for each. This ensures a common user experience when provisioning and managing datastore instances.

To that final point, our friends at Tesora introduced their new Database Certification Program at Trove Day. This new program will ensure a high level of compatibility between the various participating database vendors and the Trove project. Of course, Percona Server has already been certified.

I see the future of Trove as being very bright with a huge potential for expansion into other areas, once it is stabilized. I am very excited to begin contributing to this project and watch it grow.

Until next time…

Sysbench Benchmarking of Tesora’s Database Virtualization Engine

Tesora, previously called Parelastic, asked Percona to do a sysbench benchmark evaluation of its Database Virtualization Engine on specific architectures on Amazon EC2.tesora2

The focus of Tesora is to provide a scalable Database As A Service platform for OpenStack. The Database Virtualization Engine (DVE) plays a part in this as it aims at allowing databases to scale transparently across multiple MySQL shards.

DVE was open sourced last week. Downloads and source are already available on tesora.com

Some of the features include:

  • Transparent Sharding of data accross multiple storage nodes.
  • Applications can connect to DVE directly, using the MySQL Protocol, no code changes required.
  • Transactional and full ACID compliance with multiple storage nodes.
  • Storage Nodes can be added on an existing cluster.

Benchmarking Setup

Synthetic benchmarks were run using sysbench on different environments and different DVE architectures, as provided by Tesora. Architectures with 1 and 3 DVE nodes were benchmarked using up to 5 storage nodes.

The environments include a disk-bound dataset, the purpose of which is to create more insight into how large datasets might scale across multiple nodes. This type of use case is a common reason for companies to look into solutions like sharding.

A memory-bound dataset was also benchmarked to find out how DVE performs.

The memory-bound dataset was also used to compare a standalone MySQL Instance with a single DVE node using a single storage node. This provides more insight into the amount of overhead DVE creates at its most basic setup.

The remainder of this blog post gives a general overview on the findings of these benchmarks.
The full report, which includes more information on the configuration and goes deeper in it’s analysis of the results, can be downloaded here (PDF).

Scalability

OLTP – Disk Bound – Throughput:

In terms of scalability DVE lives up to its expectations as long as there is enough CPU available on the DVE nodes.

More complex transactions that query across multiple shards scale quite well. The explanation for that scalability, which is beyond linear, is that the available memory grows as storage nodes are added. The environment becomes less disk bound and performs better.

SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE – Disk Bound – Throughput:

SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE – Disk Bound – Response Time:

Single row reads and writes scale even better. This demonstrates that sharding has to be tailored towards both the data and the queries that will be executed across those tables.

Especially when using storage nodes with default EBS storage, disk performance is bad which makes the difference even larger.

The good thing about this solution is that storage and DVE nodes can be added, and the capacity of the whole system increases. No application code changes are necessary.

Running such an environment could come at a higher cost, but it could save a lot of resources and thus money on development. Of course, as a sharded architecture such as this are more complex compared to a non sharded architecture, the operational cost should not be ignored.

Overhead

Memory Bound Throughput:

Memory Bound Response Time:

The overhead of using DVE is noticeable, but much of it is related to the added network hop in the database layer and the CPU requirements of the DVE nodes.

DVE suffers as we go above 64 threads as you can see in the big increase in response time.

CPU Intensive

OLTP – Disk Bound:

DVE nodes are very CPU intensive. Throughout the analysis, the bottleneck is often caused by the CPU-constrained DVE nodes, this is very visible when looking at the benchmark results of p1_s3 and p1_s5, which use only one DVE node.

Even with simpler single-row, primary key-based SELECT statements, the overhead is noticeable.

Keep in mind that the hardware specifications of the DVE nodes (8 cores) were much higher than the database nodes (2 cores) itself. This makes the issue even more apparent.

Summary

Overall DVE looks very promising. When looking at the sysbench results, DVE seems to scale very well, provided that there are enough CPU resources available for the DVE nodes. You can download the full report here (PDF).

It will be interesting to see how much DVE scales on larger instance types. Other types of benchmarks should also be performed, such as linkbench. It is also important to understand the impact on the operational side, such as adding storage nodes, backups & recovery, high availability and how well it works transactions in various scenarios. Stay tuned.
